Bengaluru, notorious for its traffic jams, was named one of the world’s ten worst traffic-hit cities in 2023 and the second most congested city globally. Factors such as rapid urbanization, poor planning, and limited public transport options contribute to the daily gridlock during peak hours. In a surprising revelation, Google Maps has confirmed that it is sometimes faster to walk than drive in the IT city.
Ayush Singh, a user on X (formerly Twitter), shared a Google Maps screenshot showing the travel time from Brigade Metropolis to KR Puram Railway Station, approximately 6 kilometers apart. The image indicated that driving would take 44 minutes, while walking would take 42 minutes. Singh captioned the post, ‘This happens only in Bangalore.’
The post quickly went viral, amassing over 626,000 views and 14,000 likes. While some users agreed with Singh’s frustration over Bengaluru’s traffic, others argued that similar situations occur in other metro cities. Comments highlighted that Mumbai and Delhi face comparable traffic issues during peak hours.

One user suggested using the metro as an alternative, pointing out that KR Puram is just the third station from Garudacharpalya, potentially reducing travel time to 13 minutes. Others emphasized the importance of public transport as a solution to traffic woes.
Earlier this week, entrepreneur Paras Chopra proposed an innovative idea from China to address Bengaluru’s traffic problems. He shared an article on X about a Beijing service where commuters stuck in traffic can pay $60 for a ‘rescue.’ This service involves picking up the commuter on a motorbike while another person drives their car to its destination. Chopra’s suggestion for Bengaluru entrepreneurs to adopt this idea received mixed reactions from social media users.
Bengaluru’s traffic situation continues to spark debate and innovative solutions, highlighting the need for improved urban planning and public transport infrastructure.
