French Duo Sets Guinness World Record With ‘Starbike,’ World’s Tallest Rideable Bicycle

Nicolas Barrioz and David Peyrou break world record with "Starbike," the tallest rideable bicycle, showcasing perseverance and innovation in construction, transforming their worldview and boosting self-confidence.

Nicolas Barrioz and David Peyrou, two friends from France, have clinched a Guinness World Record by constructing the tallest rideable bicycle. Their creation, dubbed “Starbike,” stands at an impressive height of 25 feet, 5 inches, surpassing the previous record by a notable 1 foot, 2 inches.

Originating from a casual pub conversation, the idea for this towering bicycle sparked inspiration in Barrioz and Peyrou. They embarked on a five-year journey, dedicating two years to the construction process itself. Barrioz alluded to the challenges they faced in his statement to Guinness World Records: “It is impossible to convey the blood, sweat, and tears involved.”

Despite facing difficulties, their perseverance yielded results, with Starbike officially claiming the title of the world’s tallest rideable bicycle. Guinness World Records states that Michelin provided the tires free of charge. The headquarters of Michelin are located in Clermont-Ferrand, where David and Nicolas unveiled their record-breaking bike at an annual bicycle festival.

To officially secure the record, David rode the bike unassisted over a 100-meter distance. “The key to its stability was the bike’s speed,” revealed Nicolas. “It had to maintain a speed of at least 15-20 km/h [9-12 mph].” The team constructed the bicycle using alloys, steel, and wood, primarily sourced from recycled furniture.

Nicolas expressed his view on wood as an intriguing material from an ecological standpoint. He believes it will replace alloy in bicycle-frame construction within a few decades due to mineral shortages.

“This experience has completely transformed my worldview,” said Nicolas. “Before this, I lacked self-confidence, was shy, and had a negative self-opinion. Now, I feel better, and sometimes I feel unstoppable; I believe I can repair, build, or design anything.”
