Passengers aboard a newly upgraded high-speed train between Madrid and Gijon anticipated a smooth journey but instead endured a three-hour nightmare of violent shaking, likened to airplane turbulence. The train, upgraded at a cost of 3,475,000,000 pounds (Rs 35,421 Crore), experienced severe instability, captured in footage by a passenger on the recently launched 300-mile rail line in northwest Spain.

The frustrated passenger wrote, ‘I hope @Renfe, @Inforenfe, @oscar_puente_, or whoever is responsible, provides an explanation to AVE 05721 passengers. We’ve been experiencing severe shaking from the Leon interchange to Oviedo. This needs urgent review for safety. I commute weekly and have never encountered such conditions before.’
The high-speed rail line, which includes Europe’s seventh-longest rail tunnel, was inaugurated in November last year after two decades of construction.
Passenger reports detailed hours of severe shaking on the train, likened to enduring intense turbulence on an airplane. One passenger even recorded footage of the chaotic incident. The shaking’s cause is currently under investigation, with Spain’s state-owned railway company Renfe attributing it to a malfunction within the train car. This incident has raised doubts about passenger safety and the reliability of the newly introduced high-speed rail line.
