A doctor from Kerala helped a passenger who had a medical emergency during a flight. Dr. Gigy Varkey Kuruttukulam from Rajagiri Hospital in Aluva used a smartwatch to monitor and stabilize a 56-year-old woman experiencing severe dizziness and vomiting on an Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco.
Dr. Gigy, who was the only doctor on the plane, acted fast and told the patient to lay down after checking her condition. He showed his ID card to the flight crew and used a smartwatch to monitor her vital signs, finding low blood oxygen levels and high blood pressure. He then administered medication from the plane’s medical kit and successfully managed her condition.
Dr. Gigy’s quick action reassured the flight crew, allowing them to continue to San Francisco, where they landed 15 minutes early. Medical staff at the airport quickly transferred the patient to intensive care at a local hospital, where she is now steadily improving.
Air India crew and the flight’s captain thanked Dr. Gigy for his timely intervention. The captain gave him a special commendation for his lifesaving efforts. Dr. Gigy Varkey Kuruttukulam has been the head of Rajagiri Hospital’s neurology department for over nine years.
