A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was arrested for allegedly smoking beedi inside a Kolkata-Bengaluru bound Indigo flight.
The 37-year-old accused was identified as CRPF head constable Karunakaran J, posted in Jharkhand. Karunakaran was arrested after Puneeth BM, duty manager of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, lodged a complaint against him with the Bengaluru airport police. According to the complaint, Karunakaran was aboard Indigo flight 6E-487 which departed from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport on September 3 at 9.30 pm.
The cabin crew reportedly smelled burning from around the restrooms. When Karunakaran came out of the toilet, the team went inside and did an inspection. Bidi and a matchbox were found from Karunakaran, reported the Indian Express.
As a result, the flight captain considered Karunakaran to be an unruly passenger and upon landing at the airport he was taken into custody by security officers and a formal police complaint was lodged. A senior police officer said that Karunakaran cited health concerns for his action. He was going to Bangalore for medical treatment. Karunakaran was booked under Indian Penal Code section 336 (causing danger to life or personal safety of others) as well as the Aircraft Rules.
