In Bhubaneswar, volunteers from the snake helpline rescued a common cobra struggling to breathe after ingesting a bottle of cough syrup.
Indian Forest Service officer Susanta Nanda shared a video on X platform depicting a cobra with a cough syrup bottle stuck in its mouth. Unable to eject the bottle, the snake was in distress until locals alerted volunteers via a ‘snake helpline’. Responders promptly arrived, safely extracted the bottle, and released the snake back into its natural habitat.
'A Common cobra swallowed a cough syrup bottle in Bhubaneswar & was struggling to regurgitate it. Volunteers from the snake helpline gently widened the lower jaw to free the rim of the base of the bottle with great risk & saved a precious life. Kudos' Mr. Nanda shared a video praising the volunteers.

Internet users expressed gratitude to the rescue team and emphasized the need for responsible waste disposal to protect wildlife and the environment. One user remarked, 'Well done for aiding a living creature.'
Another commenter expressed, 'When will people start taking responsibility for disposing of their waste properly and safely? Thank you, Susanta, for sharing and raising awareness.'
One commenter suggested implementing strict anti-littering rules, particularly in protected areas. Another remarked on the significant impact humans have had on both wildlife and their own species.
This incident highlights a broader issue: human activities have scattered plastic fragments globally. Even seemingly pristine areas like forests are now infiltrated with plastic, posing health risks to wildlife who unknowingly consume it.
