Dating trends are constantly evolving. Initially, mutual friends arranged dates for their friends. However, the advent of social media, dating apps, and other platforms has simplified connecting with more people.
Online dating has become the norm for new-age romance, and catchy terms and phrases like fizzling and master dating are taking the internet by storm.
Gen Z currently dominates the dating scene, causing a shift in relationship dynamics. Now, ‘boysober,’ a new relationship trend, is gaining popularity among those who are frustrated with modern dating.
As per the reports, American comedian Hope Woodard first coined the term “boysober.” This trend focuses on keeping one’s twenties free from toxic dating habits and complicated relationships.
What Is Boysober? – Explained By Hope Woodard
Woodard explains that it involves eliminating the “fake sense of validation from dating, situation-ships, and casual sex, and redirecting that energy.” In simpler terms, Boysober is a yearlong commitment to abstain from all dating activities, including sex, as an act of self-care.
Although people might think boysober only applies to women, it is actually a gender-neutral term. It encourages all young single individuals to take a break from dating, situationships, exes, toxic relationships, and hookups.
Woodard explained that a boysober year provides an opportunity to reflect, heal, and focus on what one wants next. Reports describe boysober as Gen Z’s take on sex positivity. It promotes the timeless wisdom of valuing self-love in romantic relationships.
Ms. Woodard clarified that boysober differs from celibacy, which is often tied to religious restrictions. She expressed her dislike for celibacy, as it suggests that abstaining from sex makes a person more lovable, respectable, or better.
“I hate the word celibacy,” the comedian and storyteller Hope Woodard told the audience on Tuesday at her show “Boysober,” in which she details her yearlong break from sex and dating. One fan called it “this year’s hottest mental health craze.” https://t.co/hK87dXSwTW pic.twitter.com/yZHUaVdgQ6

Instead, she explained that boysober is about taking time to pause, reflect, and reprioritize, without seeking male or female approval.
Boysober isn’t the only dating trend that has gained attention recently. The penny method has been identified as one of the most toxic trends, and ground hogging is considered the top dating trend to avoid.
The penny method involves gradually reducing the effort put into a relationship that was initially used to win someone over, until they are satisfied with the bare minimum.
In contrast, ground hogging refers to the practice of repeatedly dating or seeking the same type of person while expecting different results each time.
