Pakistan: The Rescue 1122 team found an elderly beggar unconscious on Khushab Road in Sargodha, Pakistan. He had over Rs 0.5 million (1,60,544 INR) in his pocket, including PKR 534,000 and a passport showing multiple trips to Saudi Arabia.
Upon discharge from the hospital, he retrieved his money and belongings, reported Geo News. Local residents told the rescue team that the man had been regularly begging in the same area.
In September last year, concerns arose about Pakistani nationals using Umrah visas to beg in Saudi Arabia. The ministry of overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development reported this issue to the Senate Committee on Overseas Pakistanis, according to The News.
At a standing committee meeting, the secretary of the ministry of overseas Pakistanis stated that 90% of beggars detained in foreign countries were Pakistanis.
He informed the Senate committee that the Iraqi and Saudi ambassadors reported their jails were overcrowded due to these arrests. Most pickpockets caught in Saudi Arabia’s Masjid Al Haram were of Pakistani origin, exploiting Umrah visas for begging.
