Anand Mahindra, the Chairman of Mahindra Group, recently addressed a situation that questioned his loyalty to his own brand, with an emotional response that highlights his deep connection to the vehicles his company produces. On September 1, a social media user, Rattan Dhillon, shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), questioning why Mahindra, a strong advocate of the “Made in India” initiative, would choose to drive foreign brands like BMW and Mercedes instead of a Mahindra vehicle. This post, which seemed to cast doubt on Mahindra’s commitment to his products, prompted a heartfelt clarification from the industrialist.
Mahindra’s Deep Personal Bond With Cars
Mahindra’s response was filled with nostalgia and pride as he recounted his long history with the vehicles produced by his company. He explained that since the launch of the Mahindra Armada, he has exclusively used vehicles made by Mahindra, never owning or using any car of another brand. “He was taught to drive by his mother in her light sky-blue Premier car, which she affectionately named ‘BlueBird’ (formerly known as Fiat) and he also shared how he later moved on to using Mahindra’s CJ3 UV at his home in Kodagu. This emotional connection to his vehicles is more than just professional loyalty; it’s a part of his life and identity.
Hormazd, you have covered Mahindra since the time I joined the company. So you are in a unique position to call out this fabricated and fake story. Thank you.
And for the record:

Anand Mahindra Clarifies Brand Loyalty Claims
The conversation on social media escalated when Autocar India Editor Hormazd Sorabjee clarified that Mahindra has indeed been loyal to his brand for over 30 years. On September 2, Anand Mahindra himself joined the discussion, reiterating that he has always chosen to drive Mahindra vehicles, transitioning from a Hindustan Motors Contessa, which was his company car when he joined Mahindra & Mahindra in 1991, to a Red Scorpio N, which he currently drives. His pride in the cars his company builds was evident as he mentioned occasionally borrowing his wife’s silver XUV 7OO, describing it as a “matter of enormous pride & joy.”
Mahindra also addressed the specific image shared by Dhillon, which showed him sitting in front of a foreign car. He clarified that the photo was taken at the Monterey Car Week, during the launch of Mahindra’s Battista electric hypercar. The car behind him in the picture was a classic vintage Cisitalia, designed by Pininfarina, a company owned by Mahindra.
