Mount Everest ‘Traffic Jam’ Video Raises Alarm as 2 Climbers Remain Missing

It's just one of many shortcuts in the never-ending rush hour to get to the top of the world's highest peak (at 8,848 meters).

A video showing high climbers at the top of Mount Everest has gone viral on social media. According to the report, the climbers were stranded after an incident on Tuesday in which British climber Daniel Paterson and his Nepalese Sherpa Pastenji became trapped under the ice while descending from the summit. On May 20, Rajan Dwivedi posted a video on Instagram showing him waiting in line behind dozens of climbers trying to reach the summit.

“Mt. Everest is no joke and is quite a serious climb,” Mr Dwivedi said in an Instagram post.

He successfully reached the summit of Everest on May 19 at 6 am.

This is just one of many clips of what appears to be an ongoing traffic jam to the top of the world’s highest peak (8,848 meters), which many users on social media have dubbed the “traffic jam.”

Many environmentalists and climbers have expressed concern about Everest being overcrowded. Its popularity has not waned despite accidents and deaths on the mountain.

The latest duo feared dead is Mar Paterson (39) and his guide Pastenji Sherpa (23). They reached the summit as a group on Tuesday, but have not been heard from since, according to the report.

The company that organized the expedition said the collapse occurred on Hilary Step, a vertical cliff near the summit, and that the men “fell through a very steep escarpment on the Tibetan side.”

The peak is considered dangerous because the oxygen level and air pressure at such a height are not sufficient to sustain human life for long.

Paterson accepted the challenge to help raise money for the family of a gymnast who recently died of cancer.
