New Delhi: A 16-year-old girl from Western Australia jumped into a river to swim near a pod of dolphins, and the shark killed her. According to media reports, while having fun with friends in the Swan River in the Perth district of North Fremantle, the girl was attacked by an unidentified type of shark.
The official said, “They were on jet skis. Possibly a pod of dolphins were being seen nearby, and the teen jumped in to swim nearby the dolphins.”
At the press conference, officer Paul Robinson said, “It’s very early on, what we’re being advised is that she was with friends on the river.”
After numerous unsuccessful attempts by the authorities to revive her, she was declared dead at the scene. After hearing about the tragedy, the deceased teen’s family is inconsolable.
After the incident, the state government issued a warning to the public, advising them to exercise additional caution when swimming in the Swan River in North Fremantle. They also urged the public to respect any beach closures.
According to reports, it was the region’s first fatal shark attack in a century. Experts in fisheries said it was unusual to find sharks in that section of the river. The last fatal attack in an Australian river happened in 1960, according to research released by the Taronga Conservation Society. It happened when a snorkeler was attacked by a bull shark measuring almost 11 feet at Sydney’s Roseville Bridge.
