Tennis icon Mahesh Bhupathi has called upon the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider changing the owners of the Bengaluru team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are facing significant challenges in IPL 2024, sitting at the bottom of the standings with just 2 points and a negative net run rate of -1.185.

Having suffered defeats in 6 out of 7 matches, the team led by Faf du Plessis is currently enduring a streak of 5 consecutive losses. To have any chance of progressing to the playoffs, they’ll need to produce a remarkable turnaround in their performance.

The United Spirits Limited currently holds ownership of RCB, succeeding Vijay Mallya who was the team owner from 2008 to 2016. Bhupathi, a winner of 12 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles, emphasized the necessity of introducing a change in ownership.

Mahesh Bhupathi expressed his viewpoint on ‘X’ regarding the need for BCCI to ensure the sale of RCB to a new owner who is committed to developing a sports franchise, aligning with the interests of the sport, the IPL, fans, and players.

RCB vs SRH

RCB’s performance in the ongoing T20 league has undeniably been in disarray. Not even halfway through their campaign, Bengaluru must secure victories in nearly all their remaining matches to stand a chance of progressing to the next round.

In their recent encounter against SRH on Tuesday, RCB’s bowlers struggled immensely, allowing Hyderabad to amass a colossal total of 287 for 3. Travis Head’s lightning-fast IPL century left RCB reeling. Every bowler leaked runs, with Reece Topley, Yash Dayal, Lockie Ferguson, and Vijaykumar Vyshak conceding over 50 runs each in their allotted four overs.

Subsequently, Dinesh Karthik’s blistering knock of 83 runs at a strike rate of 237.14 provided some hope, but RCB fell short by 25 runs, managing to reach only 262 for 7. RCB faces a daunting task ahead as they prepare to take on Shreyas Iyer’s KKR at the Eden Gardens on Sunday, April 21st.
