The Telangana government has appointed AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi as the Pro-tem speaker. He represents the Chandrayangutta Assembly seat in Telangana and is the brother of Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of AIMIM.

BJP MLA T Raja Singh has raised objections to Akbaruddin Owaisi’s appointment as Pro-tem Speaker. In a video statement, he expressed his opposition, citing an order by the Congress government directing everyone to attend the oath ceremony on December 9 in front of Akbaruddin Owaisi. Raja Singh firmly stated his refusal to take the oath in front of AIMIM or Akbaruddin Owaisi as long as he is alive.

Typically, the most senior MLA of the House assumes the role of Pro-tem Speaker, tasked with administering the oath to new MLAs and conducting the election for the Assembly Speaker.

T Raja Singh, the BJP MLA from Goshamahal, criticized the decision, accusing the government of making a significant mistake to appease the minorities. He questioned Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, asking if they intend to follow a similar path as the BRS government did in 2018 when Owaisi was previously made the pro tem speaker, leading to their refusal to take the oath.

Singh highlighted alleged issues with Akbaruddin Owaisi, mentioning possession of government lands and purported statements inciting violence against Hindus. He adamantly stated the BJP’s stance, asserting that no BJP MLA will take the oath under these circumstances.

In the recent Telangana assembly elections, Congress secured 64 seats out of the 119 assembly seats contested. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the ruling party, obtained 39 seats, while BJP secured 8 seats, AIMIM got 7, and CPI claimed one seat. State Congress President Revanth Reddy and Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar met the Governor on December 3 to stake their claim to form the government.
