Fatty liver desease

New Delhi: Fatty liver is now one of the common diseases among youngsters preceding diabetes and heart disease. However, avoiding alcohol and eating healthy food can prevent the chances of fatty liver, said leading gastroenterologist Dr. DK Sarin in an event organized in parliament to mark World Hepatitis Day.

Sarin, the director of Delhi’s Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), cautioned people listening there against neglecting the symptoms of the same.

According to Dr. Sarin, a healthy liver consists of a small amount of fat which is not more than 5% of the organ’s weight. It becomes problematic when fat reaches 10% or above of the liver’s weight.

Sarin told MPs listening curiously and cautiously that nearly one in every three adults suffers from the problem of fatty liver in India. He said that the same is also referred to as fatty liver disease.

The doctor informed me that If the problem of fat was detected in time and treated, many complications could be prevented.

He further added, “10% weight loss can help reduce fatty liver and some fibrosis (thickening or scarring of the liver tissue) even.”

The lack of awareness among people about fatty liver is the real problem, stopping the timely cure.
