Arvind Kejriwal: Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal, who is in Gujarat, said on Sunday that the BJP is pretending to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat.

Raising doubts over the intention of the Gujarat government, Kejriwal said the ruling party had made the same promise before the Uttarakhand assembly elections but did not implement it after winning the election.

“They formed a committee after winning the Uttarakhand elections, which has now disappeared,” Kejriwal said. He claimed that the BJP has now formed a committee three days before the Gujarat elections which will disappear even after the elections.

At a press conference in Bhavnagar, Kejriwal said a Uniform Civil Code should be implemented, as Article 44 of the Constitution clearly states that it is the responsibility of the government to do so, but this should be done after consultation and consent with all the communities.

Is BJP waiting for Lok Sabha elections?

Arvind Kejriwal questioned why the BJP does not implement it in the states where it is in power, including Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. He also questioned why the UCC should not be implemented in the whole country, is the BJP waiting for the Lok Sabha elections?

The BJP on Saturday said that it was planning to bring a Uniform Civil Code. The Congress has called it a tactic to increase the Hindu majority votes.

The Gujarat government has proposed a committee headed by a retired high court judge to examine how such a law can be implemented.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi said that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken a historic decision in the cabinet meeting today to form a committee to implement Uniform Civil Code in the state.
