During summer break, children eagerly anticipate a respite from the scorching heat. However, it’s common for teachers to assign homework and projects during this time. Recently, a video surfaced of a mother expressing her frustration with holiday homework that went viral and sparked a lively debate among social media users.

In the viral clip, she highlights that many teachers give students projects and assignments beyond their capabilities, often requiring parents to finish them. She urges teachers to assign tasks that align with students’ abilities so they can complete them independently without parental help.

Shared on June 30, the video quickly gained significant attention online, amassing over 6.6 lakh views. The mother’s plea sparked a wave of reactions from viewers.

Someone else suggested, ‘If I were the Education Minister, I would make sure students up to Class 8 have no homework.’

A viewer noted, ‘They’ll use this in their marketing to demonstrate how excellent their schools are for new parents to enroll their kids. It’s a funnel.’

A parent agreed, ‘Schools should assign homework according to the class level. My son received homework to ‘Draw human body parts.’ How can 2nd graders draw human body parts?” Another added, “I’m also doing my daughter’s summer vacation homework, which is a 3D model to show longitudes.’

Conversely, one person defended the practice, saying, ‘Parents don’t want to spend time with their child. Why does a creative activity suddenly become a burden? You should sit with the child and make it enjoyable to ensure they stay engaged with learning.’

Another shared their experience, ‘I used to do all my homework myself, with my dad only providing guidance. The point of these projects is to learn. You should help your child balance playtime and homework evenly. The main reason for homework is so that when a child returns to school, they haven’t forgotten everything.’

Someone else remarked, ‘This is a peculiar situation in India. It’s well-known that much of the homework can only be done by parents, yet it’s still a routine…’
