Morbi Tragedy: Police have detained nine people in connection with the morbi bridge collapse trangedy that killed at least 134 people, inlcuding many childrens.
Video footage from just before the collapse shows few people are shaking the bridge side to side while other ones are taking pictures, before it collapsed in the river Machhu in Gujarat’s Morbi on Sunday evening.
Citing Gujarat police, Reuters reported that they had detained nine people after registering a criminal case against unnamed people responsible for the renovation, maintenance and management of the bridge.
Senior police official Ashok Yadav said details of the detained people would be revealed later in the day.
Local officials told Reuters that the manager of the bridge, Gujarat-based electrical appliances maker Oreva group, known for its Ajanta clocks, had not informed the authorities that the bridge would be reopened last week after repairs, adding that no fitness certificate had been issued.
The Gujarat government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased, while PM Narendra Modi dedicated a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of those killed in the mishap.
It is claimed that there were around 500 people on the “hanging bridge” when the cable broke on Sunday evening, causing hundreds to fall into the river. According to officials, the bridge can only carry the weight of 125 people.
