New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his warmest greetings to the Israel Prime Minister Yair Lapid and to the Jewish people around the world on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year.

“Warmest greetings for Rosh Hashanah to my friend Yair Lapid , Israel’s friendly people and the Jewish community all over the world,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

“May the new year bring good health, peace and prosperity to everyone. Shana Tova!” he said.

What is Rosh Hashanah?

Sunday marks the start of Rosh Hashanah, also known as the Jewish New Year, which marks the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days.

Rosh Hashanah, which starts at sunset on Sunday and continues through Tuesday evening, represents the beginning of the Jewish New Year, translating from Hebrew to mean the “head” of the year. It’s commemorated with special prayers, foods, gatherings and more.

The celebration of the new year is the only Jewish holiday that is two days long both inside and outside Israel. It’s called yoma arichta, translated as “a long day” because the 48-hour celebration may be thought of as one extended day.

The holiday celebrates not only the Jewish New Year, but also the birth of the universe and the beginning of the Days of Awe – 10 days of repentance and renewal that culminate in Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
