New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the new Parliament House amid grand celebrations and installed ‘Sengol’ in the new building. PM Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, all BJP leaders, Central Government Ministers, and MPs reached the new Parliament House.
At the same time, more than 20 opposition parties, including Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), AAP, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Janata Dal (United), have boycotted the inauguration ceremony. Ahead of the inauguration of the new Parliament building, security has been beefed up around it. Delhi Police Special CP Dipendra Pathak said that over 70 policemen have been deployed in and around the area.

21 Dharmapuram Adhanam saints from Chennai handed over Sengol to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. Sengol will be installed in the Lok Sabha chamber of the new Parliament today between 8.30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The name Sengol is derived from the Tamil word ‘Semmai’, which means righteousness. The sceptre is a historical symbol of independence as it marks the transfer of power from the British to the Indians.
Before the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament House, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, “Our Parliament is the temple of our democracy. There was a time when Rahul Gandhi tore our government, our PM’s ordinance in front of the public and weakened our democracy. Opposition parties have always weakened democracy. I want to thank the PM for strengthening the democratic institutions. The opposition should reconsider its decision and participate in this (function).”
