Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry to Oscars, confirmed the Film Federation of India on Monday. The film was competing against big budget movies such as Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor, Chandu Champion led by Kartik Aaryan, Vicky Kaushal starrer Sam Bahadur, Rajkummar Rao’s Shrikanth, Malayalam National Award winner Aattam as well as Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light.
What Kiran Rao Said
Expressing her desire to make Laapata Ladies India’s official entry to Oscars, director Kiran Rao had earlier told PTI, “My dream would be fulfilled if it was chosen to go to the Oscars. But it’s a process, and I’m hoping Laapataa Ladies will be considered. I’m sure the best film will be selected, whoever they choose in the scheme of things.”
However, in February, Kiran had prioritised box office collection over everything. While talking during a press screening for the movie, Kiran had said: “Our primary recognition comes from the audience’s response at the box office. If the viewers and the nation appreciate our work, that would be the greatest accolade for us.”
As far as the Oscars are concerned, Kiran said that it’s not something within her control. “There is a specific community tasked with assessing and selecting the finest films of the year, and if our film is deemed worthy, we will submit it for the prestigious Oscars. However, for now, we are eagerly anticipating the recognition we are yet to receive on March 1, 2024,” she had said.
Laapataa Ladies Oscar submission 2025: Plot
Laapataa Ladies revolves around two young brides, Phool and Jaya, who get swapped on their way to husband’s home. The film follows their journey as they struggle to find their identity in a patriarchal society. It also beautifully critiques the century old traditions that don’t let women grow.
The film features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastav in the prominent roles along with Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma.
