England cricketer icon Ian Botham was saved from crocodile attack by his former rival Merv Hughes. Botham, 68, was on four-day fishing expedition with his former Ashes rival when things took dangerous turn. This happened when they were moving across their main expedition vessel. He got caught on the rope and fell into the Moyle River. Mayol river in about 200 kilometers South of Darwin.

Botham’s former Ashes rival and Australian cricketer Hughes came in between and dragged him out of the water. Ian survived a scare after falling into river, under which crocodile’s were crawling. He was left will bruises all over his body.

“At the end of the day Crocodile Beefy survived. I was out of the water quicker than I went in it. Quite a few sets of eyes were having a peep at me. Luckily I had no time to think about what was in the water,” Ian said. Ian further praised those who rescued him.

He further stated that, “The guys were brilliant. It was just one of those accidents. It was all very quick and I’m OK now.”

Moyle river area is particularly known to have roughly five crocodiles per square Kilometers. Besides being friends off the field both cricketers shared intense rivalry on the field.

Both represented England cricket in 102 Test matches scoring 5200 runs, with highest of 208 runs in an inning. He has played 116 ODI matches and made 2113 runs for England, with highest 79 runs in an inning. Botham had fabulous time in Test match. Ian made his Test debut against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1977. He made the impact when he took 5/74 to put England on Top.

Who is Merv Hughes?

Hughes was one of the finest fast bowlers represented Australian cricket in 53 Test matches and made 6017 runs, with highest of 72 runs in an inning. He also represented the team in ODIs format where he played 33 matches and made highest of 100 runs in a match. He made his Test debut against India.
