Dengue Cases On Surge In Delhi; Here’s What We Know So Far

According to MCD's report published on August 7, the number of dengue fever cases recorded in the capital as of August 5 was 348 cases.

New Delhi: The cases of Dengue have spiked in Delhi, causing an alarming situation for the city’s healthcare system. As per the latest data revealed in the House on Tuesday, as many as 3,000 cases have been reported so far in the past six months alongwith one death.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also informed that the most case of the vector-borne disease were reported in September in past four years. However, the civic body has not shared the date month-wise.

It is worth noting that the MCD has shared the official data on number of cases of dengue, malaria and chikungunya. According to MCD’s report published on August 7, the number of dengue fever cases recorded in the capital as of August 5 was 348 cases.

The number of dengue fever cases reported in July was 121

According to reports, 40 in June and 23 in May. The AAP-led MCD has not released weekly reports on dengue and other vector-borne diseases in recent weeks.

Delhi experienced flooding in July due to unprecedentedly high water levels Yamuna. The capital also receives heavy rainfall in September, in addition to pre-monsoon rainfall. The official data was shared in the House on Tuesday, a senior official said in a brief written response.

BJP councilor and Leader of Opposition in the House Raja Iqbal Singh criticized the AAP-led MCD for not releasing data on dengue and alleged that official data was being “suppressed”. Soon after, the MCD shared the data in the House, copies of which were also distributed to the press.

According to data shared by financial year, there have been 3,013 dengue cases and one death so far in 2023-24.

The number of dengue cases in previous financial years was 4,469 (FY2022-23); 9,613 (year 2021-2022); 1,072 (year 2020-2021); and 2,036 (in 2019-20), according to the data.

Dengue deaths in previous financial years stood at — 9 (FY2022-23); 23 (2021-22); 1 (2020-21); and 2 (2019-20), according to the data.

The number of cases of malaria and chikungunya since April 1 until this year is 294 and 23 respectively.
