Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has issued a tender for constructing an Air Train or automated people mover (APM) for Terminals 1, 2 and 3 which will have 4 stops. This was the first air train in India, and it could be the reality as early as 2027. This train will have 4 stops – Terminal 2/3, Terminal 1, Aero City and Cargo City.
This train will be the substitute for DTC buses which the commuters use between two distant terminals for now. Reports suggest that the operator is likely to get bids for this in October and November. The winning bidder will be decided by the cost quoted by different parties and other factors.
What are Air Trains?
Air Trains are globally free to use for passengers to ensure seamless transit between the terminals. It is basically a monorail system that runs between the terminals globally across several International Airports in order to ensure smooth and hassle-free services to commuters. Passengers use this connection to travel from one terminal to another especially when they have transit flights. AirTrain arrives and departs within a short span of time at the designated stations.
What is the need for an Air Train at Delhi Airport?
With over 7 crore passengers annually, Delhi airport continues to be the busiest airport across India. Delhi airport now plans to double its capacity to 13 crores in the next 6-8 years and therefore, it desperately needs an air train. According to a few reports, it is estimated that approximately 25% of travellers will be transit flyers and hence they will need seamless transfers between the terminals. Experts also suggest that the upcoming immense traffic at the Delhi Airport could only be managed by an air train.
