New Delhi: In Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki, a couple has been held for their alleged involvement in religious conversion.
As per a statement by police said on Monday, the couple was involved in allegedly convincing the villagers in Thathrai locality in Haidergarh area to change their religion to Christianity, reported the news agency PTI.
The report further mentioned the name of accused couple that is Harendra Singh and his wife Priya Singh. The two are residents of Jankipuram locality in state capital, Lucknow.
The police arrested them on Sunday and booked them under Uttar Pradesh’s Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, informed the officials. He added that the police has also seized material related to religious conversion.
For the past three years, Harendra and Priya were living in Haidergarh. All these years, they tried to manipulate villagers to accept Christianity. As per the information, workers of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) informed the police reagrding the matter.
After which, the police launched an investigation, leading to his arrest.
Forcible Conversion Cases
Over a past few years, cases regarding forceful religious conversion are being reported in high number. In a similar case, the police arrested a couple from UP’s Ghaziabad for enticing the deprived people of the society to adopt Christianity.
In an FIR filed against the couple, the complainant said the two were influencing people to convert for last two-and-half decades. They also took a big hall for prayers.
Earlier in June this year, one of such case was reported from Indore city of Madhya Pradesh.
In the news, father of 8-year-old son complained that a man forcibly converted the minor to Islam. In his complaint, the man told his son and wife were lost in 2018. However, he came to know that the two were living with the accused all these years.
