A 54-year-old Mr. Shu from Zhejiang province in China had been suffering from a persistent and distressing cough, going on for as long as two years. He was afraid of getting cancer and had taken a lot of medicine, but there was no effective relief. His coughing was continually bothering his normal life, and he was at his wit’s end.
Finally, he sought out experts at Zhejiang Hospital. After the scans, doctors found what appeared to be a mass in his lungs about 1 centimeter in diameter. They said it could either be pneumonia or a tumor and scheduled a biopsy.
It was in the process then that the medical team came up with a surprising discovery: there was a piece of chili pepper stuck deep in Shu’s lung. It was revealed that two years before this incident, while Shu was enjoying a hot pot, he had choked on it and inhaled a chili pepper. The small object could not be noticed in previous scans since it was hidden by tissue.
This was an unexpected finding that surprised both Shu and the attending physicians and even the doctors. It told them that something as simple as a piece of food could have been responsible for such prolonged discomfort and coughing, mimicking serious health conditions.

Importance of Medical Persistence
This case therefore teaches the importance of a good physical examination and how everyday, commonsensical exposures or activities impact a person’s health. For Mr. Shu, it was a lesson in not giving up in seeking medical attention for persistent symptoms but being persistent, as the cause is not always clear. After having the chili pepper removed, Shu found relief from his chronic cough that had no clear cause prior.
The story received wide publicity in the local media, including the South China Morning Post, which highlighted how small accidents can lead to serious health problems. Shu’s story had a happy ending, but hers is a classic case of caution and being vigilant in life.
