New Delhi: At least 19 Rajya Sabha MPs have been suspended for entering the Well of the House and raising slogans during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. 19 MPs including Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev, Dr. Shantanu Sen and Dola Sen have been suspended for the remaining part of the week.
The suspended MPs include Sushmita Deb, Dr. Shantanu Sen and Dola Sen, Mausam Noor, Shanta Chhetriya, Nadimul Haque, Abiranjan Vishwas (all Trinamool Congress) besides A. Rahim and Shivdasan (Left), Kanimozhi (DMK), BL Yadav (TRS) and Mohammad Abdullah.
The proceedings of the Upper House have been adjourned for 20 minutes due to the uproar by the opposition MPs. Significantly, this action comes a day after Speaker Om Birla suspended four members of Congress for the entire session over the uproar in the Lok Sabha. Congress MPs Jyotimani, Manickam Tagore, TN Prathapan and Ramya Haridas were suspended on Monday for creating ruckus in the Lok Sabha.
On Monday, Speaker Om Birla had indicated to take tough steps while adjourning the Lok Sabha at 2.30 pm amid constant uproar by the opposition MPs. He had indicated to throw those showing placards out of the house. After this a meeting of all the parties was held in Birla’s chamber in which the opposition parties assured Speaker Birla not to show placards in the house and not create a ruckus.
Opposition MPs had also given assurance of cooperation in the smooth functioning of the House, despite this placards were raised in the House and there was uproar. After this, Speaker Birla, taking a tough decision, yesterday decided to suspend four MPs for the entire session.
It is worth noting that the Opposition MPs, who are creating a ruckus with placards and banners over rising inflation and GST on essential commodities, are demanding that PM Narendra Modi should come to Parliament and listen to them on these issues. The opposition is continuously demanding a discussion on inflation. The Monsoon session of Parliament started from July 18, but due to the uproar of the opposition on various issues, the proceedings have been disrupted continuously.
