YouTube recently rolled out a slew of new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features at its Made on YouTube event. The company said Shorts creators can now create video backgrounds and clips with sound using a new free AI tool. The Alphabet-owned video streaming platform also introduced Playables on Live, allowing creators to play more than 75 games while interacting with their audience.
Veo 3 AI Model Comes to YouTube Shorts
YouTube has teamed up with Google DeepMind to bring a custom version of the Veo 3 video generation AI model to YouTube Shorts. Creators can now use the platform to generate video backgrounds and clips with sound. The tool is said to produce 480p videos with “lower latency,” all for free.
Availability and How to Use the Tool
The new YouTube Shorts feature is currently available for creators in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Here’s how to use it: tap on the create button, then click on the “sparkle icon” in the top right corner. According to YouTube, the new AI tool will soon be available in other regions.
Upcoming Features for Shorts Creators
Soon, YouTube Shorts creators will be able to use the new Veo 3 AI model to turn still photos into videos, give them styles like “pop art” or “origami,” and add objects such as props, characters, or effects using text prompts. The company said the feature will begin rolling out in the “coming months.”
AI Tools for Podcasts
YouTube will also bring the Google Veo 3 AI model to its Podcasts section, letting podcasters create video clips and Shorts from full episodes. If a podcast doesn’t have video footage, the AI tool can generate a “customisable” video using the audio files instead.
New Features for Live Streaming
YouTube also announced new features for live streaming, including Playables, which were previously limited to users with over 75 games. Creators can now use this feature during livestreams to engage with their audience and monetise their content. Another update will let creators start a vertical livestream, while an AI-powered tool will allow streamers to create highlights or Shorts from their live sessions.

- Powerful AI features are coming to Shorts, including Veo 3 Fast integration, quick edits for first drafts, and Speech to Song, which turns dialogue into a fun soundtrack.
