YouTube, the world’s largest online video platform, is all set to bring stricter laws for users who will use ‘clickbait’ headlines to promote their content. The Alphabet owned company shared a post in their blog and informed about the same. YouTube termed certain headlines as “egregious clickbait”. YouTube mentioned that certain clickbait and misleading headlines will certainly confuse the viewers and leave them frustrated and tricked.
The blog post read, “Egregious clickbait occurs when the video’s title or thumbnail includes promises or claims that aren’t delivered within the video itself, especially when that content focuses on breaking news or current events.” The post further added that it will “leave viewers feeling tricked, frustrated, or even misled – particularly in moments when they come to YouTube in search for important or timely information.”
The organisation stated that the video which will contain politics and information based contents will firstly come under the scanner under the policy. At first, YouTube will take down the videos which will not deliver the message as it is there in the video. It added that there willn’t be any strike on the YouTube channel, which will give users the time to get used to their new policy.
YouTube has yet to issue a clarification what does it mean while showing videos having breaking news or current events. It also adds that how will the organisation plan to identify the content with “egregious clickbait”. In the first instance, the platform hasn’t planned what steps must the user take to put down such videos with fake content.
