X Dilutes Power Of Blocking: Social Media Platform X changes the functionality behind its block button. With the new change, a blocked account of a user will be able to see their public posts. Elon Musk first confirmed these changes in September 2024. He wrote on X, “The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, (a) public post.” Now, the X officially announced the changes to the block functionality.

Independent app researcher Nima Owji told ‘TechCrunch’ in September 2024 that blocked users will see the account’s public posts, like they were any other user. However, there will likely be limitations in reposting, quoting, replying, or engaging with blocked accounts, he further remarked.
Currently, if a public account blocked a user, that user could view the public account’s tweets by simply logging-out.
X Diluted The Power Of Blocking: In The Past
This is not the first time when X dilutes the power of blocking. In 2013, Twitter (now X) came with a policy to allow blocked users to see content, follow, and even engage with those who have blocked them on the platform. The account that initiated the block will not have visibility into these engagements, but others would. However, after a massive backlash from users, twitter quickly reversed its policy to keep stronger blocks in place.
This time, the updates for X (previously twitter) differs. Engagements are still not allowed under blocks.
Notably, Tesla CEO Musk acquired Twitter for a record $44 billion deal in April 2022. Since the acquisition, Musk has made major changes to the social networking platform including, renaming it to X. Under Musk’s leadership, X started charging users a fee to get verified.
