Google’s AI company DeepMind has announced that it would soon be establishing an all-new fully automated research lab in the UK. This lab will use AI tools and robots to conduct scientific experiments on their own. Human involvement in this lab will be limited to monitoring. The lab’s primary focus will be on new research about the application of new materials for batteries, semiconductor chips, solar panels, and superconductors.
These materials will help transform medical imaging, such as MRI machines. These materials will soon help transform medical imaging, renewable energy, and computer technology. It is possible that we might be able to see such labs operational in due time.
UK Government and DeepMind sign an agreement
The research lab will be launched under an agreement between the UK government and DeepMind. British scientists will be supported by DeepMind’s specialized AI tools such as Alpha Genome for DNA analysis, Alpha Evolve for algorithm design, Weather Next for weather forecasting, and AI Co-Scientist for virtual research assistants. DeepMind CEO, co-founder, and Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis said:
“AI has tremendous potential to usher in a new era of scientific discovery and improve everyday life. This power will be accelerated by an automated research lab.”
How will the lab work
Currently, scientists conduct all the research manually, which takes considerable time. These new labs will fully integrate the Google Gemini model, which will determine the next research steps. Robots will create materials, conduct tests, and collect data. Hundreds of materials can be synthesized and tested in a single day. Humans will simply monitor the entire process, interpreting the results and conducting their own research.
Major benefits of such labs
- A larger testing rate can be used, streamlining the process of research. Hence, with this process, months of work can be completed in just minutes.
- With such labs, the manufacturing process can be streamlined as well, ensuring that the manufacturing of batteries and solar panels can be expanded.
- The field of semiconductors and superconductors will accelerate, leading to extremely fast, low-power chips and improved computing.
- If AI is inculcated into research on nuclear fusion, it will lead to solar-like energy. This will pave the way for pollution-free and inexhaustible electricity.
