As the world moves towards AI-led change across industry, government and society, India has been ranked third in the global AI Vibrancy Index, according to a new study by Stanford University. The United States tops the list, followed by China.
The report highlights strong global competition in artificial intelligence. India’s third rank marks an important achievement, showing the country’s growing role in the global AI race.
Scores of the Top Three Countries
According to the study, the United States scored 78.6, China scored 36.95, and India scored 21.59. While the US and China remain far ahead, India has performed better than several developed countries, including South Korea, the UK, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Germany and France.
The report says India’s performance reflects its fast-growing technology sector and large pool of skilled workers.
Stanford’s AI Vibrancy Tool measures the overall strength of a country’s AI ecosystem. It looks at factors such as research and development, skilled talent, investment, economic impact, infrastructure, public opinion, and government policy.
The tool helps identify where AI innovation is happening, how talent is growing, and how much support governments are providing. The rankings were also visualised by Visual Capitalist using Stanford’s data.
Why Ranking Matters for India
The ranking is seen as a major boost for India. It shows rising investment in AI, growing research activity, a strong startup environment, and a large number of engineers and developers. Both the government and private sector are increasing their focus on AI, helping India strengthen its global position.
Concerns Highlighted in the Report
The report also warns of a growing risk. If the benefits of AI are not shared fairly, the global wealth gap could widen. Some countries may advance quickly, while others fall behind. The study stresses that AI development should benefit all nations, so that no country is left out of future progress.
