A New Development in Nutrition Tracking

Focusing on antioxidation levels, Samsung has studied the presence of carotenoids — key indicators of fruit and vegetable intake — and then created a device small enough to sit on your wrist. This innovation turns complex antioxidant data into simple, actionable health insights for everyone.

One of the biggest challenges for Samsung was shrinking the lab-grade sensor into a compact size that could be worn comfortably. It took the company seven years to develop a miniaturized sensor featuring groundbreaking technology that combines multi-wavelength LEDs with a custom photodetector array to provide accurate carotenoid readings.

Beyond that, Samsung tested the new sensor across a variety of skin types to ensure seamless performance for a broad range of users. Hundreds of participants validated the sensor’s accuracy and reliability.

How the New Sensor Works

Carotenoids are natural red, yellow, and green pigments found in fruits and vegetables. Since the human body cannot produce these compounds on its own, carotenoid levels serve as a clear indicator of how many fruits and vegetables a person consumes.

These readings are used to generate an Antioxidant Index Score, which classifies carotenoid levels into three broad categories:

  • Very Low: Less than 50% of the daily WHO recommendation of 400 g per day
  • Low: Between 50% and 100%
  • Optimal: 100% or more

Since carotenoid levels are also influenced by sleep quality, stress levels, and physical activity, the Antioxidant Index provides a well-rounded indicator of overall health.

With the new technology integrated into the Galaxy Watch 8, features like Sleep Coaching, Activity Tracking, and Vascular Load Monitoring now combine to offer a holistic view of well-being.
