Reliance Jio Down: Users In Major Cities Report Connectivity Issues

5G rollout in India has witnessed a few challenges. One of the primary challenges is the allocation of frequencies - Indian operators apparently have a more limited spectrum than foreign operators. Further, initial 5G services were supposed to use 4G and LTE network infrastructure in the initial rollout phase, which makes them vulnerable to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.

Reliance Jio customers are reporting connectivity issues in several areas across the country. Users have reported being unable to make calls and are also encountering problems accessing mobile internet.

According to user reports, the connectivity issues began on July 6 around 8:10 PM. Media reports have further revealed that there have been service outages in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kochi, but these were resolved in an hour. Beyond that, the disruption primarily impacted 5G users in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

While the outage has been reported in a few select areas, it has also become apparent that only a limited number of users are being impacted. A report by Downdetector has further revealed that more than 11,000 complaints were lodged within hours of the outage. Going by the reports, around 81% of users are experiencing mobile connectivity problems with their signal, while close to 13% are having issues with internet, and 6% are reporting problems with phone functionality.

Jio has recently gone through several similar outages. Previous blackouts hit Kerala on June 16, Gujarat on June 29, and Madhya Pradesh on July 1.

Users from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kochi are all facing issues accessing Jio services. Here’s why 5G proliferation has been slow in India.

Challenges With 5G Roll Out in India

5G rollout in India has witnessed a few challenges. One of the primary challenges is the allocation of frequencies – Indian operators apparently have a more limited spectrum than foreign operators. Further, initial 5G services were supposed to use 4G and LTE network infrastructure in the initial rollout phase, which makes them vulnerable to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Thus, even while 5G networks are an advancement, they would inherently adopt the vulnerabilities of the previous network.

The 5G network relies on Network Function Virtualization and Software-Defined Networking; the challenge with these is that they use widely adopted protocols which can be manipulated by hackers. The use of IoT devices can further increase the chances of issues. While no details have been revealed as to what was the reason behind the outage, such issues are inherent with the 5G rollout in India, as per 5G in India: Opportunities and Challenges published by IJNRD.
