QR Code Fraud

QR code scam: Online money transfers have become the norm in today’s digital age. People rely on online UPI for payments in various scenarios such as hotels, shops, ticket bookings etc. However, this convenience has also given rise to a surge in online fraud, including the alarming trend of QR code scams. This article provides an in-depth understanding of QR code scams and also offers guidance on how to prevent falling victim to them.

QR code apps

The QR code scam is rising at an alarming rate across the nation. Fraudsters are employing various tactics to swindle Individual’s money. Individuals scan QR codes to transfer money to another person’s account. Unfortunately, fake QR code apps are widely available on platforms like the Play Store, and other deceptive apps. These are actively misused by fraudsters.

How Fraud happens?

With the help of these fake apps, scammers can input the desired amount and the recipient’s name.  These criminals visit shops or hotels and present the fake QR code with the manipulated details to the establishment. The recipient of the code, often a hotelier or a shop owner, believes that the payment has been received as per the displayed information. But unfortunately, in reality, no funds have been received on the given details.

Prevention

To prevent this QR fraud, certain precautions must be taken. The foremost step is to wait for a confirmation message on your registered mobile number whenever a money transfer is initiated. This message acts as verification that the transaction has indeed taken place. In the absence of such a message, it is advisable to cross-verify the transaction details using your bank’s official app.

As the QR code scams continue to rise, it is crucial for individuals to remain informed and use their wit while engaging in online transactions. By adopting these precautionary steps, individuals can better protect themselves from falling prey to fraudulent schemes
