OpenAI on Friday confirmed plans to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year, saying India is its second-largest market by users. However, the exact location of the office in New Delhi has not been finalised yet.
Officially establishing an entity in India, OpenAI has started hiring a dedicated local team, which will focus on working with governments, businesses, developers, academic institutions, and local partners.
According to OpenAI, India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the United States and is among the fastest-growing. Weekly active users in India grew more than fourfold over the past year. Notably, the country is also one of the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform and accounts for the largest student base using ChatGPT.
The company is all set to host its first Education Summit in the country later in August. It is also scheduled to hold its first Developer Day in India later this year. The event will bring together start-ups, developers, and enterprises, all playing a key role in shaping the future of AI.

The announcement comes on the heels of recent India-focused initiatives, such as ChatGPT Go, a subscription plan priced at Rs 399 per month with UPI integration.
