OpenAI has recognized that GPT-5.1 Instant was its most-used model, while the GPT-5.1 Thinking model is better calibrated to address both simple and complex queries, ensuring that users receive either fast or detailed responses based on the context.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hailed the new releases and pointed out how users can now customize the AI models to fit different modes and communication styles.

OpenAI also compared the answers that the new version provided with those of previous models. It presented examples showing how, when responding to a stressed-out user, GPT-5.1 Thinking offered relaxation tips, while GPT-5.1 Instant addressed the user by name and empathized with what they had been going through recently before offering advice.

The rollout is happening gradually over the coming days, with OpenAI highlighting that users will be given sufficient notice to switch to a new model before an older one is removed.
This was previously a sore point for the company when it released the GPT-5 model.
“GPT-5 (Instant and Thinking) will remain available in ChatGPT under the legacy models dropdown for paid subscribers for three months, so people have time to compare and adapt at their own pace,” said the company.

Gmail and Google Calendar Integration
For Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise users, GPT-5.1 can now connect directly to Gmail and Google Calendar. It can pull in your schedule, marking a genuine step toward having an AI that can actively manage your day.
Developer-Focused Controls
Developers will be able to modify various elements based on their needs. Users can adjust Reasoning and Verbosity controls, and use Custom Tools with plain text to refine how the model performs and responds.
