A latest update from the cyber security researchers at Cybernews, has revealed that a data leak of extensive magnitude has compromised close to 16 billion accounts. The leaks contain log in credentials, passwords and sensitive data from major online platforms. The investigation team that has been trying to find the reason behind such a breach have acessed 30 separate data dumps. Each of these contains close to tens of millions to 3.5 billion records. The team has confirmed that the number of compromised accounts has reached close to 16 billion.

How Was the Data Stolen

Vilius Petkauskas- Author at Cybernews iterated that the leaked data appears to be the result of various info stealer Malware attacks- Malicious software designed to quietly collect usernames, password and other sensitive data from the infected devices. 

The leaked credentials include Login information for social media accounts, VPN’s developer tools, and Major online services, including Apple, Google, Facebook, Github, Telegram and even Government portals.

Most of the stolen information is formatted as a simple URL link followed by usernames and passwords. It’s possible that if you have ever logged into anything online your information would be in this leak. Beyond the issues, cyber space erudites have recommended users to invest on password management solutions and dark web monitoring tools to ensure safety against such issues.

Unlike recycled data, researchers have emphasized that this fresh new weaponizable intelligence at scale can cause issues and provide cyber criminals with a clear chance at identity theft, and highly targeted phishing attacks. In the wrong hands such integral data can cause immaculate devastation.

Here’s What You Can Do

Security experts have recommended immediate password changes across all online accounts, enabling multi factor authentications wherever possible and beyond that using password managers to generate unique and strong passwords.

Beyond that, users are also being asked to monitor their accounts closely and consider using services like the ” have i been pwned” to keep a check on whether your credentials have been compromised.
