Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 17 Air has officially entered the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn, Digi Times report said, citing sources. This upcoming iPhone model may be the Apple’s thinnest smartphone yet, and it’s likely to take the place of the ‘Plus’ model in the company’s flagship series for 2025.
The NPI phase is a critical process that transitions a product from concept to large-scale production. As per the Macrumors report, this phase contains various stages, including design validation, prototype testing, supplier qualification, and manufacturing process development.
Furthermore, new details have emerged regarding the dimensions of the upcoming iPhone in a recent report by ‘The Information’.
iPhone 17 Air: What We Know?
According to ‘The Information’, prototypes of the iPhone 17 Air are measuring between 5mm to 6mm in thickness. In contrast, the current iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models are notably thicker, measuring 7.8mm and 8.25mm respectively. The substantial decrease could several design changes, including the subtraction of the physical SIM card tray. This means that the iPhone 17 Air may shift entirely to eSIM technology.
Moreover, in the US, Apple has been offering SIM-tray-free iPhones since the iPhone 14. However, models sold in other countries continue to have a physical SIM card tray. Reports suggest the thinnest iPhone will feature a prominent, centered camera bump on its rear, potentially with a single camera sensor. Furthermore, this may be a major step back from the dual-camera configuration found in the standard iPhone 16 models.
Additionally, reports indicate Apple may offer iPhone 17 Air with a smaller battery pack compared to existing models. Another compromise may come for the audio department. Apple may offer the new iPhone with only a single speaker and forgo the second camera to safe the space in the bottom grill.
