One of the biggest highlights of the upcoming Apple event will be the iPhone Air. But according to Mark Gurman, Apple’s new “Air” might not be the perfect choice for many potential buyers. Gurman compares the launch of the iPhone Air to the 2008 debut of the MacBook Air, which was, at the time, one of the thinnest and lightest laptops ever created.
While the new iPhone Air will carry similar traits-ultra-thin form factor and lightweight design-Gurman believes the device will have some serious compromises, such as shorter battery life and a single rear camera, especially at a time when much cheaper smartphones come equipped with 7,000 MAh batteries.
He also points out that, price-wise, the iPhone Air will be sandwiched between two far superior models: more expensive than the entry-level iPhone 17, and only a few hundred dollars cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro. In terms of specifications and everyday use, the Air could fall short compared to both.
Gurman notes that while thinness was once a major selling point back in 2008, in today’s market, battery life, performance, and camera capabilities matter more to users. He also references the Samsung S25 Edge, a similarly thin smartphone that failed to gain traction in the market due to underwhelming sales numbers.
He concludes that the iPhone Air likely won’t be a blockbuster product, but it could outperform the Mini and Plus models from previous iPhone generations.
iPhone Air: A Glimpse Into The Future
Despite its potential drawbacks, Gurman believes the iPhone Air represents a preview of what’s to come. He predicts that ultra-thin phones will eventually become the norm across the industry—once manufacturers figure out how to maintain Pro-level battery life, performance, and camera quality in thinner designs. Apple, he says, is simply getting there first.
Apple’s New AI Push: Siri 2.0 And WKA
In parallel, Apple is preparing to roll out a revamped Siri with advanced AI capabilities in spring 2025, likely in March. The update will include a new search feature, internally named World Knowledge Answers (WKA), designed to compete with ChatGPT and Perplexity.
The upgraded Siri will offer full voice control, smart on-screen data recognition, and more intuitive responses. Apple is currently evaluating which AI model will power the assistant-considering Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and its own in-house models-with a final decision expected soon.
