As per a recent update by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, it has been revealed that Apple is considering launching the iPhone 17 Air with a bumper case. Apple often launches its phones with a slew of specific accessories, and this time around, considering the shrinking aesthetic of the Air, Apple might bundle the phone with a bumper case.
Apple had launched a similar bumper case for the iPhone 4 back in 2010. Gurman revealed that the iPhone 17 Air cover will protect the edges of the device but not the back of it, making the case a slim bumper of sorts.
Why a New Bumper Case
It’s possible that users who buy the iPhone Air would want to retain its slim appeal and hence might compromise with an Apple-made case instead of a regular TPU case, which could hamper the phone’s appearance. As Mac Rumors puts it, the bumper case would be a fitting compromise, allowing users to carry their phone without worrying about drops, scratches, or other issues.
In 2010, Apple had offered users a free bumper case as the iPhone 4 struggled with the infamous “Antennagate” issue, where holding the phone in a certain way that covered the antenna bands led to erratic cellular reception.
As per previous leaks, it was also suggested that Apple might launch an iPhone 17 battery case, considering the puny battery that the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be equipped with. Apple last released a battery case for the iPhone 11 lineup, followed by the now-discontinued MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 models and newer.
