iPhone 16 Banned In Indonesia: The Indonesian government has imposed a ban on the sale, purchase, and use of the iPhone 16 due to Apple’s failure to fulfil its investment commitments. Indonesia’s Industry Minister, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has declared that any of Apple’s latest devices, will be considered ‘illegal’ if operated within the country. “If there is an iPhone 16 operating in Indonesia, I can confirm it is an illegal device. Please report it to us,” he remarked.
Kartasasmita also cautioned customers against purchasing the phone from abroad. The ban encompasses Apple’s latest devices, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro series, and Apple Watch Series 10, which were globally launched on September 20. According to the minister, the device has not received the requisite IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) certification.
iPhone 16 Banned In Indonesia – What’s The Reason?
Minister Kartasasmita stated that Apple’s ‘unmet’ commitments have resulted in the non-issuance of necessary permits for the iPhone 16. According to reports, Apple pledged to invest 1.71 trillion rupiah ($109 million) in Indonesia, but has disbursed 1.48 trillion rupiah ($95 million), resulting in a shortfall of 230 billion rupiah ($14.75 million). “Apple’s iPhone 16 cannot be sold in Indonesia yet because the extension of the TKDN (Tingkat Komponen Dalam Negeri) certification is still pending, awaiting further investment fulfilment from Apple,” declared Indonesia’s ministry of industry earlier this month.
TKDN is the official certification endorsed by the Indonesian government to verify the number of domestic components in goods, services, and a combination of goods and services. To obtain TKDN certification in Indonesia, companies are mandated to meet a minimum local content value of 40% to qualify for product sales within the country.
A spokesperson for Indonesia’s Industry Ministry, said that the TKDN certification application for the iPhone 16 is currently under review. The issuance of the certificate is dependent upon Apple’s fulfilment of its investment commitments.
