Instagram May Launch Standalone Reels App To Rival TikTok

Instagram is reportedly considering launching its short-form video feature, Reels, as a standalone app.

The photo-sharing application “Instagram” is exploring launching a separate application only for “short videos,” aka reels. According to reports, this move is aimed at capitalising on the uncertainty of “TikTok” in the United States and providing a similar application to users.

According to The Information, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri raised the notion at a staff meeting this week. The Meta-owned firm hopes to capitalise on TikTok’s regulatory issues in the United States, where lawmakers have expressed concerns about its ties to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

In January, Meta unveiled Edits, a new video-editing programme that appears to compete with ByteDance’s CapCut. Meta has already dabbled with standalone video apps. In 2018, the business released Lasso, a video-sharing software designed to compete with TikTok, however it was eventually terminated due to a lack of popularity.

The probable launch of a separate Reels app underlines Meta’s continued efforts to expand its position in the short-form video space. As TikTok’s future in the United States remains unknown, Instagram’s standalone Reels app may offer users a viable alternative for their short-video production demands.
