Smartphone manufacturing in India has reached new highs. Becoming the top exported goods from India, smartphone exports have surpassed other traditionally exported goods such as petroleum and diamonds that usually showcased such highs. India’s smartphone exchanges have surged nearly five-fold to the US and about fourfold to Japan in the past three years. Smartphone exports rose by 55% to $24.14 billion in 2024-25 from $15.57 billion in 2023-24 and $10.96 billion in 2022-23.
A significant export growth has also been registered with Japan where shipments surged from $120 million in 2022-23 to $520 million in FY25.
The Government-introduced Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been the undercurrent behind such surges in export. Such changes have transformed the country into a major global manufacturing hub. With such scaled production, India has been able to integrate itself more deeply into the global value supply chains.
Brans Behind Production Expansion
Apple and Samsung have accounted for nearly 94% of India’s smartphone exports in 2024. The continued expansion of manufacturing operations in India has helped the brands achieve new highs. Growth projection for 2025 smartphone manufacturing in India is expected to grow in double digits in 2025. Further leading value addition ahead.
In the last fiscal, the top five nations where India registered highest growth in smartphone exports were the US, The Netherlands, Italy, Japan and Czech Republics. Mobile phone exports from India crossed a steep Rs 1.75 trillion in the first 11 months of 2024-25. The number thus reached is higher than that of the number that was projected earlier by officials. Who had estimated that the exports would be able to touch around $20 billion within the upcoming year.
