As Ghibli-style images take the internet by storm, cyber experts have issued serious warnings about potential security risks and data misuse. Platforms like ChatGPT and Grok include disclaimers, but experts caution that these disclaimers often trick users into unknowingly granting permission to save private photos or data.
In this report, we highlight some of the possible risks that could lead to sextortion, large-scale fraud or blackmail. News24 spoke to cyber expert Ankur Puranik who shed light on these growing concerns. Here are a few key excerpts from the conversation.
May Lead To Sextortion And Blackmail
These days, people are obsessed with artificial intelligence and Ghibli-style images. Many are transforming their photos into Ghibli-style visuals and sharing them across social media platforms. The trend has taken over timelines, creating a wave of aesthetic AI-generated content. While the trend is gaining popularity, cyber experts have urged users to exercise caution. According to them, Ghibli-style images could potentially become a tool for online fraud in the near future. Among various risks, the threat of sextortion stands out as the most alarming. Fraudsters may exploit these AI-generated images to manipulate or blackmail individuals, using their photos as bait.
“Sharing personal photos and data can lead to serious crimes like sextortion and blackmail,” warned cyber expert Ankur Puranik in a conversation with News 24. He advised users to be extra cautious and think twice before uploading personal photos, videos, or sensitive financial information such as credit and debit card details.
