ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, was down for several users on Sunday. This happened as its servers were overwhelmed by a surge in demand for its new Studio Ghibli-style image generation feature. ChatGPT rolled out this new feature early last week. After it went viral, users enthusiastically began sharing their artistic creations across social media.
Open AI Updates
30 Minutes after Open AI acknowledged that ChatGPT was down, the AI platform informed- “All impacted services have now fully recovered. The team will publish the detailed Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in the next five business days,” they shared at 4:40 PM on Sunday, March 30. “We’re currently experiencing issues”, adding “We have identified that users are experiencing elevated errors for the impacted services. We are working on implementing a mitigation.”
Downdetector, a website that monitors online service disruptions, showed a massive spike in reported problems with OpenAI. It noted that the issue started around 4.19 pm on Sunday. According to them At least 219 complaints has been lodged with the chatbot.

OpenAI startup CEO Sam Altman had earlier on Sunday posted on X, “Can y’all please chill on generating images this is insane our team needs sleep”. Replying to another post Altman said, “We just haven’t been able to catch up since launch so people are still working to keep the service up. Biblical demand, i have never seen anything like it.” He also revealed three days back that “GPUs are melting”.
