Elon Musk has introduced an audio-video call feature on his social media app, X. Initially, this feature is accessible only on iOS, but it will soon become available to Android users as well. Premium subscribers will have the capability to initiate audio and video calls, while other users can receive calls. Musk, in a post on X, mentioned that this is the first version of audio-video calling.
To activate this feature on X, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Privacy and Safety.
- Enable audio and video calling in direct messages.
- After enabling the feature, you can specify who can call you—verified users, people you follow, or contacts from your address book.
For iOS users, making audio or video calls is a straightforward process:
- Tap the envelope icon to access your messages.
- Choose an existing direct message conversation or start a new one.
- Initiate an audio call by tapping the phone icon or a video call by tapping the same icon.
- You can switch between audio and video calls as needed.
- Notifications are sent to the recipient’s account when a call is initiated.
Here’s how you can manage audio-video calls:
During an audio call, tap the audio icon to enable speaker mode, and use the microphone icon to mute or unmute yourself.
In a video call, switch between the front and back camera by tapping the flip camera icon. To deactivate speaker mode, tap the audio icon, and the camera can be turned off by tapping the camera icon.

Elon Musk’s vision for X is to create an all-encompassing app. In August, he announced that X users would be able to make video and audio calls on the platform without sharing their phone numbers, and now this feature is a reality. Notably, it’s compatible with iOS, Android, Mac, and PC.
Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter (now X) in October 2022 for $44 billion marked the beginning of significant changes. He aims to transform X into an “everything app,” incorporating various features, including a payment service.
