ChatGPT Down: Users Face ‘Unusual Activity Detected’ Error Amid Outage

ChatGPT experienced an outage affecting thousands of users in the United States, with many encountering the error message "unusual activity detected" while attempting to access the service.

OpenAI chatbot ChatGPT faced a major outage in the United States on Tuesday afternoon, with thousands of users reporting issues, according to DownDetector. Users in India also faced problems like being unable to load history and unresponsive chats. DownDetector, which keeps track of these kinds of outages based on user reports, said that more than 3,400 users reported a ChatGPT outage within the United States.

OpenAI’s chatbot users took to Twitter and discovered they could not load chat history and received an “unusual error” detected message as they tried to access their chats. According to DownDetector, 82% of users experienced a ChatGPT outage, 12% reported an outage with the website, and 6% indicated an outage with the app.

OpenAI Responds To Outage

OpenAI responded to the ChatGPT outage on Tuesday, saying that they have identified the issue and are investigating it. The company said that ChatGPT’s record mode, Sora and Codex were experiencing problems. A mitigation will be implemented soon, it added.

“We have identified that users are experiencing elevated levels of errors…,” the message on OpenAI’s service status page read.
