In recent times, a concerning trend of fraudsters using AI technology to conduct deceptive video calls has emerged. These scams involve criminals collecting personal information, such as name, address, and relatives, from social media platforms about their intended targets.
Armed with this data, they employ Artificial Intelligence to create convincing fake video calls, complete with a fabricated face and even a copied voice, making it difficult for victims to detect the ruse.
One such incident was reported in Kozhikode, Kerala, where a man received a WhatsApp video call from an unfamiliar number. On the call, he saw the face of a former colleague who claimed to be in dire need of Rs 40,000 for a medical emergency.

Fortunately, the individual crosschecked with a friend, which saved him from falling prey to the fraudulent scheme.
These AI-deepfake scams have resulted in several cases where individuals, particularly women, have been deceived by impostors posing as their husband, son, or brother. The perpetrators rely on the manipulated video call to evoke sympathy and trust from their targets, convincing them to part with their money.
To protect oneself from falling victim to such scams, it is crucial to exercise caution and follow some essential precautions:
Investigate Unknown Calls: Be wary of incoming calls from unfamiliar phone numbers. If you do not recognize the caller or expect such communication, proceed with caution.
Verify Identity: When in doubt about the caller’s authenticity, ask personal questions related to their identity that only you and the legitimate caller would know. Genuine individuals will be able to provide satisfactory answers.
Refrain from Sharing Sensitive Information: Avoid sharing personal information, financial details, or any sensitive data with unknown or untrusted individuals, especially when solicited through online channels.
