A new report reveals that WhatsApp will no longer provide updates or security patches for thirty-five mobile phones from popular brands like Samsung, Motorola, Sony, and Apple.
According to CanalTech, the Meta-owned platform has changed its minimum system requirements in its latest update, which now affects users with older phones.
Devices Impacted By The Latest WhatsApp Update-
– Apple: iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone SE, and iPhone 6S Plus
– Samsung: Galaxy S3 Mini, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Core, Galaxy Grand, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Zoom, Galaxy Express 2
– Motorola: Moto X and Moto G
– Huawei: Ascend G525, Ascend P6 S, Huawei C199, Huawei GX1s and Huawei Y625
– Lenovo: Lenovo 46600, Lenovo P70, Lenovo A858T, and Lenovo S890
– Sony: Xperia E3 and Xperia Z1
– LG: Optimus 4X HD, Optimus L7, Optimus G, and Optimus G Pro
The policy change will significantly impact users in India, especially those with phones from brands like Huawei and LG, which no longer sell products in the country. Although these brands have stopped selling phones, many people still use them and will now need to upgrade to a newer smartphone to continue using WhatsApp.
Reason Behind The Update
Smartphone makers usually support devices for only a few years, so apps like WhatsApp focus on optimizing for newer software versions. WhatsApp has introduced these new requirements to ensure that users have access to the latest security features and functionalities. Going forward, the app will only support devices running Android 5.0 or later and iPhones with iOS 12 or later.
