ASML Pitches For Business In India Amid PM Modi’s ‘Made-in-India’ Chip Push

ASML Holding NV, a semiconductor equipment manufacturer, pitched for business in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that he seeks to manufacture chips domestically to cut imports of the critical technology. The Veldhoven, Netherlands-based company is a key supplier to Samsung Electronics Co. and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Its Chief Executive Officer, Christophe Fouquet, who attended the Semicon India summit in New Delhi on Tuesday, said that ASML looks forward to deepening its collaboration with Indian companies in the year ahead.

“We are dedicated to supporting India’s ambition, whether through collaboration, knowledge exchange or talent,” Fouquet said. “Our advanced lithography solutions can help Indian fabs to achieve cutting-edge performance.”

With an aim to set up a domestic chip industry, PM Modi expects the first made-in-India chips to reach markets by the end of the year, potentially creating a new market for ASML’s machines. India is joining nations like the US, China and Japan in developing their semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, partly to reduce reliance on other countries.

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is reaching out to local partners to establish a data center with a capacity of at least 1-gigawatt. This comes at a time when the world's largest chipmakers have not yet committed to investments in India. The move is significant because ASML makes the machines needed to manufacture the kind of high-end chips used in everything from mobile phones and medical devices to military gear and artificial intelligence.
